Job Title: Project Engineer

Position Summary:

Hiland Construction is seeking a highly motivated Project Engineer to support our growing portfolio of residential and commercial construction projects. This role is ideal for someone who seeks hands-on experience in both fieldwork and project management, with a clear advancement track to becoming a Project Manager.
The Project Engineer will work directly with the President of Hiland Construction and serve as a critical link between the office and the field—coordinating subcontractors, supporting carpenters, managing schedules, and maintaining real-time project communication inside JobTread.

Work Schedule & Training Expectations:

  • 8–12 weeks in the field during onboarding
  • 3–4 days per week on active job sites
  • 1–2 days per week in the office working alongside the President
  • Field training will cover daily logs, safety compliance, site coordination, and subcontractor management.

Key Responsibilities

Field Coordination (Primary Focus During Onboarding)

  • Work directly with on-site subcontractors and Hiland carpenters to ensure project progress
    aligns with scope, schedule, and quality standards.
  • Support site layout, material tracking, and day-to-day field operations.
  • Assist with quality assurance, punch lists, and field issue resolution.
  • Conduct and document site walks, safety observations, and daily progress reporting.

Project Management Support (JobTread-Based)

  • Build and maintain project schedules in JobTread.
  • Manage daily logs, document uploads, budget updates, and customer-facing communication.
  • Send, track, and document subcontractor and vendor messages inside JobTread.
  • Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to confirm deliveries, mobilizations, and work
    sequencing.
  • Help prepare customer updates, milestone summaries, and project closeout documentation.

Administrative & Office Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the President to review project financials, schedules, and change orders.
  • Prepare submittals, RFI’s, purchase orders, and procurement logs.
  • Assist in estimating, takeoffs, and scope development for upcoming projects.
  • Participate in company meetings, planning sessions, and process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field (required).
  • Prior construction or carpentry experience is highly beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with field crews, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.
  • Proficiency with technology; experience with JobTread is a plus (training provided).
  • Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and scopes of work.
  • Strong organization, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from job sites.

Work Hours & Benefits:
Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Promotional opportunities include management positions as the company grows.
Compensation: Salary position, DOE.

Major duties & responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, supervise, and perform journeyman-level rough and finish carpentry in the alteration and construction of buildings, decks, cabinets, windows, doors, and specialty wood items; perform related work.

  • Familiar with 2018 building codes and MOA standards.

  • Install foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using materials such as: wood, steel, metal,
    concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials.

    concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials.

  • Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground levels.

  • Studies specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and
    determine dimensions and materials required.

  • Shapes or cuts materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.

  • Follows established safety rules and regulations and maintaining a safe and clean environment.

  • Builds or repairs cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures used in buildings,
    using woodworking machines, hand tools, or power tools

  • Assembles and fastens materials to make frameworks or props, using hand tools and wood
    screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.

  • Removes damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand
    tools.

  • Inspects ceiling or floor tile, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or
    damaged structures.

  • Moves necessary materials around jobsite as assigned.

  • Cleans up worksite debris.

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Capable of receiving and following instructions and communicating with co-workers.

  • Able to read construction documents and adhere to labels, safety warnings, and guidelines.

  • Attentive to detail and always alert to ensure safety on the jobsite.

  • Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma.

  • 4 years of experience in commercial or residential carpentry.

  • Ability to comprehend schematic diagrams, blueprints, sketches, building plans and other specifications.

  • Strong working knowledge of job site safety as well as ability to complete a company specific safety orientation.

Work Hours & Benefits:

Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5pm with opportunities for OT on Saturday’s Promotional opportunities include Superintendent and management positions as the company grows.

Compensation: $40 – $50/hr.

Major duties & responsibilities:

  • Performs various physical duties as assigned.
  • Maintain all safety standards.
  • Moves, secures, installs, builds, loads, or unloads materials. concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials.
  • Performs some specialized tasks that may require on-the-job training. concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials.
  • Effectively using heavy and light equipment, depending on the jobsite/assignment.
  • Moves items from place to place, according to direction from the site supervisor.
  • Moving tools, equipment, or other material as directed in plans or by supervisor.
  • Read blueprints, construction safety plans, and quality plans.
  • Loads and unloads tools and building materials into work vehicles.
  • Follows all local, state, and national building codes and regulations.
  • Follows written and verbal instructions from the construction manager.
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, and heavy construction tools to complete construction projects.
  • Builds temporary structures at the construction site, such as signs, scaffolding, ramps, and barricades.
  • Drives work vehicles to and from construction sites.
  • Reports any issues to the construction manager.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and regulations.

 

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines.
  • Attentive to detail and alert at all times to ensure safety.
  • Able to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers.
  • Handles the physical demands of the job, including standing, walking, kneeling, bending,
    crouching, pulling, pushing, climbing, and lifting at least 50 pounds.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Works well independently and with a team.
  • Knows construction math skills, including how to convert quantities, take measurements, and
    solve basic equations.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to safely operate various vehicles and equipment.
  • Previous experience, especially in particular industry, preferred.
  • Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
